"I was bored, so I went to the white house blog today. It was kinda painful. And confusing. I broke down one of their arguments for you. Note: The only things I added to the arguments are titles, kinda like SSI (supporting statement one)that way I can make my argument a little easier to type/understand.
Yet, despite the overwhelming evidence that the status quo is unsustainable, there are some in Washington who still wish to kill reform at all costs. And they've spread baseless rumors to scare the American people about what reform would mean for them
Attack(Republican): Health insurance reform will raise taxes on the middle class.
Ø Reality Check(Premise 1): The real health tax in our health care system is a hidden tax of $1,000 that the millions of Americans who get insurance through their job or buy it on their own are already paying each year to cover the costs of caring for Americans without health insurance.
o (Premise 2) And if the people making these attacks get their way by killing reform, that hidden tax will only continue to grow by the day as more and more people lose their insurance.
o Premise 3)What President Obama has proposed isn't a tax. Its a law requiring people who can afford health insurance to purchase it, so that the rest of us dont get stuck footing the bill and a penalty for violating that law.
§ (SS3:1)People are required to obey the speed limit and have to pay a penalty if they get caught speeding? Does anyone consider that a tax?
§ (SS3:2) People are required to have car insurance and can be fined if they are caught without it. Is that a tax?"
I will argue premise two first. In the beginning of this blog, they condemned the use of "...basless rumors to scare americans...". In premise two, without providing evidence for their claims, they said that people will be taxed more and lose health insurance. Now assuming the following definitions (baseless means without evidence; rumors are statements without providing evidence; and higher taxes/less health care are both scary situations to americans), they have just used baseless rumors to scare americans.
Now for premise three, and the supporting statements.
SS3:1, Relevance? Speeding endangers the people around you. Not buying health care is a personal choice that affects no one else.
SS3:2 I agree with this one, it is not a tax. It is extortion. (If we accept that extortion is to coerce another into doing something against their will under the threat of force. Example: If I don't pay money to this man, he will publish my dark secrets; If I don't buy health insurance, then I get fined.)
Premise 3: In addition to the argument from SS3:2, all the other premises imply that they want every american to have health insurance. Now, since the goal is for every american to have health insurance, let us assume the success of these plans.
Every american has health insurance.
Americans who don't have health insurance pay for those who do through fines.
In such a situation, there would be no one paying for health insurance.
Now, there are several conclusions tht logically follow. Such as, 1.The government is lying, and there will be another source of monetary support. 2.The governement has not thought this through, and the plan will fail.
Maybe they didn't think thier stuff through as well as they thought...
